Kanji Series: Kowai, Ame, & Tsuki
In the fall of 2023, I felt was inspired to delve into a Kanji typography series. My interest in Japanese language and culture, started through years of studying in high school and a minor in Japanese studies in college, laid the foundation for this project. Starting with simple sketches, I handpicked Kanji characters that intrigued me, envisioning them as unique abstract typography posters. 'Kowai' kicked off the series, meaning fear, followed by 'Ame' for rain and 'Tsuki' for the moon. Each selection carried its own charm and significance. Moving from paper to digital, I translated my sketches into Adobe Illustrator, meticulously refining each design. Sized at a manageable 10x10 inches, the artworks began to take form, ready to be shared with others.
Seeking to expand my creative horizons, I decided to experiment with screen printing using a Cricut printer and smart adhesive vinyl. By converting my designs into outlines and exporting them as PNGs, I was able to achieve the desired effect of a screen print.
